Although sulfur has many functions, it takes more knowledge to use it safely. Sulfur can easily react to produce poisons (biodegradable), which can irritate the eyes and mucosal tissues. Pay special attention to safety when using it. Use low-concentration and very small proportions of pure sulfur powder ( pharmaceutical grade ). Don't mix any other material casually with sulphur. You must study to make sure there's no dangerous chemical reaction before you mix them. Consult a professional first. It's better to refer to existing recipes to make your own stuffs.

Some people may be curious, why use it if sulfur is so troublesome to use? The answer is because sulfur has more benefits. It's an original substance in nature and a basic element required for living beings cell delivery. The chemical mechanism of sulfur will not make microorganisms, germs, and pests have drug resistance. Its compounds can also be degraded and reduced. Sulfur can be excreted by metabolism and is also non-polluting to the environment.

Compared with plant extracts or essential oils, if you mainly want to kill bacteria or mites, the relatively inexpensive sulfur has a more significant and rapid effect. But sulfur is not suitable for long-term uninterrupted use on a large area of ​​the whole body, and it is easy to slightly irritate eyes. It's suggested is to use sulfur for .periodically,or .topically apply on skin. Appropriate use of sulfur can solve many problems in daily life.

Effects of sulfur on skin

★ ◆ Kill fungi, bacteria, parasites and mites
Sulfur will slowly react with keratinocytes and bacteria on skin to synthesize hydrogen sulfide and polythionic acid. Thus it produces bactericidal effects. The sulfhydryl/thiol group (-SH) is converted into an S-S bond, which softens the keratin and helps to kill parasites and eggs that hide in skin. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is highly toxic to microbes and parasites. But for humans and animals, low-concentration topical application is safe and metabolizable. Sulfur itself won't cause irritation. (There are very few hydrogen sulfide normally in our human body and farting gas.)

It's best to use it periodically and temporarily, such as taking a bath, scalp conditioning or skin detoxification once a month, applying it as a mask for a short time, and then flushing it away after a few hours. If you have skin problems, apply it topically to help relieve it. It’s OK to use it on skin every day, but if the long-term problem persists, it's better go see a doctor. Especially for infectious skin diseases such as scabies. You can solve the problem faster by medical treatment.

Most of the sulfur on skin will be reacted within 24 hours, but it will not enter the blood vessels. Studies have shown that a very small amount will be excreted in the urine. Sulfur itself has no odor. The smell of rotten eggs is actually from hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

What should I note when using sulfur?

Sulfur has low toxicity and is flammable. When combined with certain substances or heated, it can transform to produce toxic gas substances such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.
Eyes, mucous membrane irritant, eating it may cause poisoning, diarrhea, asthma, lung damage, should be sealed tightly covered, in a cool ,.away from fire, electrical appliances., children cannot reach places.

■Not edible! Avoid inhaling powder particles. Long-term inhalation of large amounts of sulfur particles can harm the lungs and respiratory tract.
■Long-term use of high-concentration sulfur on the skin may cause dry dermatitis, peeling, allergies, and hair loss.
■It is irritating to eyes and mucous membranes. If you accidentally get sulfur in your eyes, rinse your eyes with plenty of water.
■Sulfur will chemically react with metals, causing them to change color. Don't wear rings, earrings and jewelry when applying sulfur or bathing.
■ Direct burning of sulfur will produce toxic sulfur dioxide gas.

sulfur proportion＜2% [ reference ] sulfur ointment for scabies treatment is 5% and 10% precipitated sulfur. According to the cosmetics regulation in Taiwan , sulfur is one of the specific use drug ingredient , not over 2% proportion of sulfur is allowed to add in skin care product, it can eliminate acne. 1% sulfur will still work fine.
Sulfur applied to skin (external use) can cleanse, exfoliate, reduce inflammation and relieve itching, supplement metabolism and collagen required elements. It has a mild effect and can be used by pregnant women and children.
O Sulfur powder for skin care should use pure sulfur powder.
pharmaceutical grade [ purified / sublimed / precipitated ]
X Don't use pesticides / insecticide sulfur which contains complex agents. Products such as sulfur water, sulfur essence (to kill insects and mites), wettable sulfur powder (for pesticide use).
Don't use "Industrial grade" sulphur powder. There will be heavy metals , chemical residues and more impurities in it.

Virgin coconut oil . is a natural detoxification oil. Containing . antibacterial / antimicrobial ingredients – Lauric acid-antifungal – Caprylic acid can improve the skin problems such as eczema. Coconut oil can make skin moisturized , help to excrete dirty toxins on skin and pores. The nice aroma of virgin coconut oil can slightly cover the smell from sulfur on skin.
PURE GRADE olive oil . can slightly dissolve sulfur powder, soften and moisturize the skin, and help sulfur molecules penetrate. (X Don’t use .POMACE.GRADE olive oil, It has solvent residues)
castor oil . moisturizing, soothing and relieving itching, improve psoriasis, and good for scalp. Castor oil can makeup the drying / peeling effects of sulphur.
Glycerin . enhances moisturizing.
Olive emulsifying wax . is resistant to acid and alkali, and the finished cream is more stable.

※ Note that sulfur is a medicinal ingredient. According to Taiwan medicine / cosmetic laws, it's not allowed to produce or import products containing drug ingredient without register and approved by government. DIY skin care products should not be sold to others, it's illegal.

5 STEPS to make a useful ✨ Sulfur Cream ✨

STEP 1 make sulfur water

Put sulfur powder into the bag
Sulfur is insoluble in water. This step is to filter sulfur powder to make the powder evenly distribute in the cream.
Heat RO water to 40-50℃
Put the bag into the warm water. Rub and shake the bag to filter sulfur powder.
Some powder will be filtered and come out from bag. If there are remaining powder in the bag, reverse the bag, and put powder back in the water. )

STEP 2 Melt and stir oils + emulsifying wax

Heat the oil/emulsifying wax - glass container in hot water (60-70℃) and stir for about 10 minutes

STEP 3 Heat sulfur water to 60℃

While stirring the oil and emulsifying wax, the sulfur water can be heated together. (water heating)
！ Be careful that sulfur water mild steam is no good for your eyes. Don't look too close or wear goggles or glasses while heating.

STEP 4 Mix oil and water, stir for 30 minutes

The steam from sulfur water will irritate the eyes, and is no good to inhale it. So just move out the oil/water mix, stir it without heating.
Stir the sulfur water, let the powder be evenly in water, and divide to 3 parts to pour in oil separately.
mix the oil and 1/3 water, stir for 10 minutes , then pour 1/3 water . stir for 10 minutes and then pour 1/3, stir for last 10 minutes and then finished.
TIPS
It's no need to stir continuously. Stir more in the first half, and when the second half is slightly thicker, stop for a while and continue stirring, it will condense into a cream faster.
Stirring with a small whisk will be better than a glass rod

STEP 5 Add additives (glycerin)

After the cream is formed, add other additives at about 40℃
Stir for 5 minutes to complete.

The cream container should be disinfected first, and then pour the finished cream. DIY skin care products should be used up as soon as possible within 1-2 months.

Skin test

After making the cream, I test it right away.
It’s pretty good. It feels instantly white and moist. It can be used as a body concealer by the way. XD

After 12 hours, the skin still has a bright film,. It not so oily as ointment, but if it's in summer, the skin might feel not so refreshing. You may need to add peppermint, tea tree essential oil, neem oil or aloe vera extract to be less stuffy.

This DIY sulfur cream is a very mild antibacterial and insect repellent formula, and it has a good anti-itching effect. You can use it on body or apply topically on face, avoid the eye area.

For sensitive skin, apply it to the back of the ear or inside the arm for a test (it can be used after 24 hours of sensitivity test without irritation and allergic reaction). It can be diluted with a little oil or water to make a lotion.

Using small proportion of sulfur and a few simple materials to DIY skin care products can clean the skin. Once a week or a month, the skin will become very clean. This cream can also supply skin, nails, and hair with healthy sulfur element.

Sulfur cream can also be used for anti-insect and anti-itch in daily life, gardening at home, traveling , lodging, camping in the wild and preventing insect bites.
