To make cold soap, you need to calculate the proportion of oil, lye and additives, especially the part of fat, each fat has its saponification value (NAOH sodium hydroxide / KOH potassium hydroxide). At first, we need to calculate 【 The amount of oil used × Saponification Value of oil 】= 【the amount of alkali】. Secondly, add up calculate the standard alkali quantity to used in this recipe. At last, set the desired water ratio of the lye and the tool will calculate total water quantity according to the ratio you've set.

More than 10 years ago, when I just started to learn to make cold soap , at that time, I used a calculator to calculate the sum of the lye by collating oil with saponification value list one by one, and then calculated the INS value. I would take it down on the draft paper, and then neatly wrote the entire recipe into the paper notebook. It was really time consuming and much work. Later, I found out a calculation tools on the Internet, and it saves my days. I can calculate them first, and then wrote down the recipe into my paper notebook.

These calculation tool online can help with calculations, but I still have to do some arrangement, in the order by each oil's precedence to add when making soap. So that I won't messed up with the oil amount. According to my actual steps to making soap, 【 put hard oils first, then soft oils】, 【cold-pressed soft oil that is not resistant to heat and high temperature, put it in the last】. I would arrange the order to put in, and wrote down by order in notebook.
This recipe note is to be read while preparing the ingredients for soap making. It will also be used next time to make the same recipe. However, if I make a different weight next time, I still have to convert all of them according to the ratio. And write down to another page.

Why did we create Green Life INFO Soap Calculator ?

Lately our workshop suddenly got a lot of customized orders , we need to make different kinds of soap in different quantities. There's no time to do the paper works. So I used EXCEL to make a simple calculation form. That's really great to have a calculator of my own requirement !! It's convenient and time-saving! With this, I won't messed up oils amount like sometimes I would forget which oil is missed to pour in. or mistakenly pour some oil's amount with other oil's.

Our soap calculator contains oil list, oil weight/percentage, hard oil ratio, soap weight, alkali/water amounts, INS value, additive ratio amount, and a text area to write MEMO. It can be printed out by simply typing each time before soaping.

The following is the details of each section.

Soap quality analysis

Soap quality analysis – INS value. Iodine value . These two values are regarded as soap essential hardness and degree of hydration. INS refers to the hardness of the soap itself after the soap is matured. The iodine value is to see if soap will become soft or have jelly like sticky surface after washing with it. The soap with higher Iodine value will be washed away more, and the appearance after washing is ugly gross , especially when the room humidity and temperature is high.

「Cleaning ability , Bubbles productivity , Moisturizing ability, Nourishing lather productivity, Stability of oxidation」is calculated based on the fatty acid of oil / fat / butter. There are 8 to 10 fatty acids that affect the quality of soap. The amount of these fatty acids in it will make soaps with different characteristics. For example: a high proportion "Myrstic acid " soap has high cleaning ability. A high proportion "Oleic acid *Linoleic acid *  Linolenic acid *Ricinoleic acid * soap has more moisturizing and nourishing abilities, that it is gentle to skin, and not overly washing the skin sebum away.

"Cleaning ability" refers to the overall cleaning ability to wash away water-soluble and oil-soluble substances. "Bubbles productivity" is more specific to wash away oily substances. So that if it's for dry and sensitive skin, then the "Bubbles productivity" should not be too high scores.

Formula calculation

The saponification value (NaOH / KOH) of 75 kinds of fats and oils is built in the "Formulation calculation" section. Hard oils and soft oils are divided into two groups. The background color is different. The most commonly used oils/butters are listed, and three optional selection menu input field for both soft and hard oils. There are many oil options in the drop-down menu. The advantage of this tool is that you don't need to fill in the saponification value / INS value by yourself, as long as you select it, the values will be implemented.

The recommended ratio of hard oil is around 50%. The soap should be well stamped, with moderate hardness and higher stability.

After selecting all the oil and filling in the weight, the lye section below will automatically calculate the standard (recommended) alkali/water amount. If you want to change the amount, you can change the ratio, and it will also be automatically calculated.

additives / super fat / MEMO

Calculate the weight of the additives according to the total oil weight entered. Usually the additives or super fat are about 5-10%. Too many additives may affect the saponification and turn into NG soap. Do some study on the additive you want to add can prevent from wasting the precious oils . The field of MEMO can be used freely to fill in the materials, the amount, or the MEMO for making soap, remarks...etc.

Total weight change

This block only needs to fill in *the total weight of oil, and it will calculate according to the original recipe's formula, and list out the changing weights of all ingredients.
