Our method of storing soap is rather primitive and simple, and does not deliberately use equipment to control humidity and temperature.
We put the soap in a kraft paper bag and then put it in a paper box. The material of the paper can be adjusted and assisted, so that the soap is in a slightly ventilated space to avoid sultry deterioration. People not familiar with cold soap may think that they are moldy when they see these white ashes / powders, but they are not. These are very special by products of cold soap ─ soap crystals (glycerin crystals).

When the CP soap has been stored for a period of time, although the saponification reaction has been completed and becomes a solid, the interior will still be affected by the cold, hot, dry and wet storage environment. Soap (sodium fatty acid), free fatty acid, soda (small soap crystal/sodium carbonate), glycerin and other constituent molecules still move and push inside the soap. Some people say that the appearance of this kind of glycerin crystals means that this is a good CP soap, or even the best. This should be regarded as a kind of individual experience.

Soap with glycerin crystals appear. One possible is that the soap itself contains more glycerin, and the other possible is that the humidity and temperature of the storage environment are relatively high. Glycerin itself is water-absorbing, and it will be smoothly squeezed out when it absorbs water molecules and expands. Glycerin is not oil, it is a moisturizing ingredient. Of course, more glycerin is a good thing, but glycerin crystals on the surface of soap does not necessarily mean that there is more glycerin in this soap. Maybe also due to the storage environment is unstable and not deliberately controlled, sometimes dry or cold. sometimes humid ,hot and stuffy. It's nothing bad with going with the flow.

In short, this glycerin soap crystal/soap crystal is also safe and not deteriorated. It usually stands for a mild soap that has nearly complete saponification and reduced alkalinity to the lowest possible level.

Looking at these soap crystals with a magnifying glass at close range, they look like ice grit particles, with a little transparency, and they are quite beautiful.

★ What kind of soap can not keep?

If you find Dreaded orange spots (DOS), dig it up locally and pinch it. It has a clay-like texture. It smells unpleasant, which means that the soap is rancid. Usually ultra-fat soap is less durable, and sometimes this happens. It may also have something to do with the freshness of the oil/butter, the oil used for super fat, or something wrong during soap making process.

Soap with orange spots can still be washed, but because of the bad odor, it is best to remove the oily spots and use them up as soon as possible.

Because of health demands, CP soaps are not normally added preservative compounds. Depending on the oils and materials used in the recipe, soaps of different recipes and raw material qualities have different life cycles. Generally speaking, normal CP soap can be stored for two years without any problem. If the soap is of good quality and stored properly, five to ten years are also possible.

For milk soap and other raw materials containing fresh food, the storage period should be conservatively estimated, and it is usually recommended to use it within one year. Our recipes have specially added a very small amount of about 0.001% grapefruit seed extract or vitamin E oil, which helps to extend the preservation. Based on practical experience, the quality of our milk soap is still normal after more than two years.

The actual shelf life of CP soap is until it has orange spots or rancidity with a obviously bad smell. Soap sellers must mark the expiration date on their products in accordance with cosmetics regulations, so they usually mark the expiration date of "conservative estimates" based on their own recipe and experience. It is recommended that customers try to use them within the expiration date. But after the expiration date, if the quality of the soap is no problem and it can still be used. You can wash your hands before use to test the safety.
